Digi-Scrapping column...

button1

A friend of mine asked me to write a "guest column" on her blog about digi-scrapping. I have a couple weeks to put something together, so I thought I'd ask around for some tips. Please feel free to answer any or all of my questions!

1. If you were talking to someone who is BRAND NEW to digi-scrapping, what's the best tip you would tell them?

2. How do you find inspiration for a LO?

3. What's your digi-scrap organization style?

4. What are your favorite sites for LO inspiration?

5. What are your favorite freebie sites?

6. Where do you go to print your LOs, and do you prefer single page printing, or full book orders?

Anything else you can think of??

  1. 1. If you were talking to someone who is BRAND NEW to digi-scrapping, what's the best tip you would tell them? Be patient - it can take time to learn your software.

    2. How do you find inspiration for a LO? Usually from the pictures themselves, but I also like to browse galleries or magazines.

    3. What's your digi-scrap organization style? I keep each kit in it's own folder in my scrap folder. I use Picassa to search for my files. I can search for anything in the file name, or add keywords to an item to help me find it easier.

    4. What are your favorite sites for LO inspiration? ScrapMatters - of course!

    5. What are your favorite freebie sites? Ikea Goddess

    6. Where do you go to print your LOs, and do you prefer single page printing, or full book orders? I usually print single pages at Scrapbookpictures.com. The quality is amazing and the prices and customer service is great. I do print full books for gifts.

  2. 1. Find some tutorials and follow along...there are tons of tutorials out there...free and otherwise.
    2. various ways, templates when I'm completely stuck, sometimes i just see it, and others i like to browse galleries.
    3. I have all my kits together. I keep all kits in a folder by designer.
    4. ScrapMatters!
    5. IkeaGoddess, when I looked for freebies
    6. i do books, or at least, I just placed my first order with Artscow.com. I've used Shutterfly too. In addition, I've printed things with my printer for hybrids, etc.

  3. Already answered 1-3 in the SM forum.
    4. I like my LO to look like paper LOs, so I like ScrapMatters gallery for inspirations.
    5. Usually just do blog freebies from designers I like.
    6. Just full books @ CherishBound.com. I do 11x8.5 horizontal. They fit better on bookshelves than 12x12.

  4. 1. If you were talking to someone who is BRAND NEW to digi-scrapping, what's the best tip you would tell them?

I think first they would have to figure out their software (PS/PSE/PSP etc) if they are unfamiliar with it. I would tell them to get comfortable with the functions and tools in their program. Then I would direct them to a tutorial on how to get started (my first how-to tutorial was at Shabby Princess), and show them how to download and unzip files. I think the freebies really drew me in at first because after spending way too much money on paper scrapping I was delighted to learn about digi-freebies. I might warn them that soon the they will be purchasing kits and beware of digi-scrap addictions. :)

    2. How do you find inspiration for a LO?

Typically I select my photos that I want to scrap and then choose some products to work with that seem to go with the photos. If I have "scrappers block" I will look in a community gallery and go scrapliftin' or find an awesome template. OH and I always feel pretty good about my layouts when I take part in a challenge!

    3. What's your digi-scrap organization style?

I feel I am really organized with my photos for the most part. My digi-scrap products are pretty organized too, although I am always lookking for ways to be able to find things easier within my "stash."

    4. What are your favorite sites for LO inspiration?

Lately I find that I go to one of the stores/communities and find their layout of the week galleries. At this point I don't have a favorite site.

    5. What are your favorite freebie sites?

    I browse Ikeagoddess quite often.

    6. Where do you go to print your LOs, and do you prefer single page printing, or full book orders?

I haven't done a lot of printing. I have only tried Costco which I was happy with, but I want to try a place that has cheaper prices like ScrapbooksToShare or ScrappinglySimple. I am thinking of stealing the idea of a scrap-buddy and doing my son's album in 8x8 on my home printer (for budget reasons just so I have a book done for him) with the intention of pringing it professionally in 12x12 at a later time when there is more room in our budget.

Anything else you can think of??

I think it is fun to become a part of a digi-scrap online community and get to know some other scrappers for encourgement.

  5. 1. If you were talking to someone who is BRAND NEW to digi-scrapping, what's the best tip you would tell them?
I usually direct new digi-scrappers to tutorials. They can be a great resource!

    2. How do you find inspiration for a LO?
From my pictures, from a cute kit, from other layouts, from ads and things around me. Anywhere, really! LOL

    3. What's your digi-scrap organization style?
I have a digi-scrapping folder that is broken down into folders for kits, completed layouts, alpha, etc. Within each of those folders, I keep things in the folders they came in.

    4. What are your favorite sites for LO inspiration?

    5. What are your favorite freebie sites?
Ikea Goddess for me, too. :)

    6. Where do you go to print your LOs, and do you prefer single page printing, or full book orders?
I've only printed a few pages, but I used Scrapbooks to Share (www.sbtoshare.com) and was happy with them. Can't beat the price! I like to print individual pages rather than books because I don't necessarily scrap in order.

  6. 1. If you were talking to someone who is BRAND NEW to digi-scrapping, what's the best tip you would tell them?

TRY IT FOR FREE FIRST BEFORE INVESTING. USE GIMP, MICROSOFT PUBLISHER OR EVEN POWERPOINT TO PLAY AROUND. THERE ARE ALSO TONS OF FREEBIES AVAILABLE ONLINE TO GET STARTED. MAKE SURE YOU KNOW WHO MADE YOUR ITEMS SO IF YOU DECIDE TO JOIN ONLINE SCRAPPING COMMUNITIES YOU ARE ABLE TO GIVE PROPER CREDIT TO DESIGNERS WHICH IS EXPECTED. (okay so that is more than one tip) Oh...thought of something else! I always remind people in my classes that digital is way cheaper than paper scrapping in the long run. You do pay for a book all at once so it seems like a large chunk of change, but when you add up all the nickel and dime items you have to pay for in paper scrapping to make the same album it ends up being WAY more money! =)

    2. How do you find inspiration for a LO? I LOOK AT A LOT OF MY FAVORITE DESIGNER'S LAYOUTS AND PAY ATTENTION TO THOSE POSTED IN GALLERIES WITH UNIQUE FEATURES. I SAVE THEM AS MY FAVORITES IN THOSE GALLERIES TO COME BACK TO LATER!

    3. What's your digi-scrap organization style?

MY SUMMER PROJECT WILL BE TO "TAG" EVERYTHING IN ACDSEE BUT FOR NOW I ORGANIZE EVERYTHING BY STORE, THEN DESIGNER. IT SEEMED LOGICAL WHEN I STARTED SINCE PEOPLE WOULD ASK ME WHERE I GOT SOMETHING, BUT NOW IF I HAD TO START OVER I WOULD ORGANIZE THINGS BY MAJOR CATEGORY THEMES SO I COULD FIND THAT ONE KIT I KNOW I HAVE!!! =) IF I'M DOING A PRINCESS LAYOUT, I COULD JUST GO TO MY "PRINCESS FOLDER" RATHER THAN HUNT ALL OVER IN SEVERAL STORE FOLDERS FOR WHERE I MIGHT HAVE PURCHASED ONE!

    4. What are your favorite sites for LO inspiration?

    SCRAP MATTERS (BRITT'S GALLERY)
    GODIGITALSCRAPBOOKING (SEXY EYES' GALLERY)
ANY GALLERY FOR SPEED SCRAPS OR CHALLENGES!

    5. What are your favorite freebie sites?

    6. Where do you go to print your LOs, and do you prefer single page printing, or full book orders?

I do single page prints at Costco for an adoption agency. I scrap all the families they work with in a year. The plan then will be to make a book at year end. The individual prints could go to the families if they choose. I have made a few wall size prints for my frames, have plans to order a canvas and I have purchased books through Winkflash, Artscow, Creative Memories and I'm putting one together now for Inkubook. I also did all of our Christmas cards through Costco for way less than uploading to their pre-made designs!
